Medical / Dental Tourism in Tijuana B.C. Mexico

Due to increased costs for medical, dental and other health services in the US, more North Americans are looking to Mexico for cost effective, safe, and effective treatments. I recently had major dental work (dental implants) in Tijuana. This guide if for those who are flying into the nearest city (San Diego) and taking public transportation, (if driving directly from San Diego is not an option) . Public transportation guidelines and information is provided, as well as logistical information for your visit in Mexico.

An important caveat, you can use your American health insurance at most medical / dental centers. You will need to find out if your center accepts your insurance. You will only have to pay out of pocket costs which are still significantly lower than in US. *Most importantly,  you will need to do an analysis of costs, to see if coming to Mexico for your treatment is worth it. My work took several visits, including flights from No. California to San Diego, then taking public transportation into Tijuana, accommodations for 1-2 days for each visit, $ for Uber, and eating out while in Tijuana. My research showed that it was cheaper to get the work done in Tijuana as my out of pocket costs was significantly lower. Also, in the beginning I was able to stay with a relative living there.  If your work will take just a few hours then you can plan out a visit without needing accommodations. Most medical and dental offices do provide UBER service to the border (San Ysidro entry). This is something you can ask. This information is not applicable for surgeries / treatments that are prolonged and where medical center is covering transportation and lodging, i.e. bypass surgeries. Again, confirm all this prior to taking the first steps.

Preplanning

1) You will need to first find the service you need (usually by recommendation or online). For example found my dentist, Dental Alvarez via google. The website was thorough, including prices for some services. I completed an intake form, got a call and booked my first in person consultation. Please read reviews of your potential Doctor/dental office!

2) Once appt is booked, if you live outside the San Diego area, book your flight. I used  both my United miles and low  budget airlines like Spirit or Southwest. In my experience they  beat Frontier due to Frontier's very strict carry-on rules. Next book a budget hotel if needed. For the first few visits I stayed with a lovely relative who picked me up and took me to my appt. (If inclined, please donate for gas and other expenses.  Be sure hotel is close to medical center and do google earth it. City Express by Marriott and Ibis were great and offered a great breakfast (buffet), while Bmyhotel was also close but it was hard to get to and the  breakfast  buffet was very modest. Again read reviews!

Getting there!

ARRIVE AT SAN DIEGO AIRPORT

San Diego airport is relatively small *(and recently remodeled). Most of the time you will arrive to lovely weather!

Find City Bus Stop

Cross the street and you will go upstairs via escalator to bus stop 992. Download the pronto app if you will be using the service on several occasions. Cash fare of 2.50 is also accepted.

Continue on Bus line 992 until reaching Santa Fe /America Plaza trolley station.

Take Trolley (Blue Line)

Once at Santa Fe Station hop on red bus (BLUE LINE) to San Ysidro (last stop). The trolley line is in front of the station. Stay on the train (approx 40 minutes) until the last stop, International border / San Ysidro.

Crossing the Border

Once you depart train, you will see  both the US Customs Border and the Mexican border entryway. If you are Mexican citizen, you can walk though section for nationals. If not go through Customs line and complete required forms.

Next steps!

You've passed Mexican customs, so last step would be to go though security. Once that is completed, you will see large sign, "Welcome go Mexico". Be sure to have cell phone set for roaming (your carrier may include calls/text within Mexico), or esim downloaded.

Getting to hotel or Medical /Dental Office

Outside of the border office there is a walkway that leads you to Taxi/Uber area. It is very chaotic! you are going to medical /dental office directly you can arrange for a pick up beforehand (*if that's an option). If not you can request an Uber. There is no sign indicating Uber area. It's basically across the street from Taxi area. You can text Uber driver and translations are part of the app.  Another option is to have mexican pesos and request a taxi. If your Spanish isn't up go par, you can show a screen shot of name and address of where you are going. Emphasis on AND, taxi drivers don't always know the address well!
